Kiez-Monatsschau Vol. XXVIII

akademie der autodidakten

The Muslim communities in Berlin feature very distinct and diverse lifestyles. Nevertheless, German media often present “the Muslims” as a homogenous group which appears to be threatening and fanatic. Confronted with these stereotypes, post-migrant youth are made to feel in many ways that they do not belong here and are responsible for a number of social wrongs in Germany ‒ violence in schools and poor PISA results, violence against women and homosexuals, anti-Semitism and terrorism ‒ regardless of whether they practice their religion or not. In the context of Kiez-Monatsschau Vol. XXVIII, the young producers and the filmmaker Pary El-Qalqili as well as the actor Hasan Taşgın examine how media coverage and economic interests are linked to the increasing social acceptability of anti-Muslim racism and Islamophobia. Together they develop strategies which post-migrant youth can use to protect and empower themselves.
