Berlin is often associated with social diversity and celebrated for it. Yet some people maintain a cautious emotional distance from the city. Some see Berlin as their city and still move through it with mixed feelings. What does the city do with us? What do we do with it?
Our perceptions and attitudes change depending on where we are; sometimes just a few meters make the difference. On one corner we walk with confidence, on another more cautiously. These mechanisms usually operate unconsciously, yet they are part of our identity. But how do young Black people and young People of Colour navigate their neighborhood, their city? In which places do moments of belonging emerge and intensify?
Since December 2025, young Black adults and adults of Colour have been coming together for an acting workshop at the akademie der autodidakten. In Voices Of The City, under the direction of actress Amaralina Schmidt, they explore their relationship to the city. They uncover the stories and processes hidden behind their everyday patterns of movement; the resonances as well as the points of friction the city offers. At the same time, they search for the traces they THEMSELVES leave in the fabric of the city and paint their own picture of Berlin.
