akademie der autodidakten

“Kiezdeutsch” (“Kiez-German” spoken in the hood) is a language spoken mainly by young people and often labeled as “Turk language”. However, it is actually a socio-linguistic phenomenon which developed from the current German language and is structured by certain rules. But most people don’t know this because in the media they mainly see characters with fake Turkish accents in programmes such as “Erkan und Stefan” or “Was guckst Du?”, producing bizarre stereotypes. Anxious critics believe the hybrid Kiez-German is a broken version of standard German and that its existence heralds not only the beginning demise of the German language but also of German high culture. If anything, Kiez-German features great linguistic creativity and grammatical innovation. As a new linguistic usage is developing, the 21st edition of Kiez-Monatschau wants to explore its creative potential using the means of film.
